“Violence against women is barbaric”, says the President of the Republic

Mattarella highlighted the need for concrete and rigorous actions

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella declared on Friday (8) that violence against women is an “unacceptable form of social barbarism”.

The president also underlined the need for constant and concrete prevention to prevent new women from becoming victims of harassment and physical or moral violence.

“Violence against women has continued to manifest itself in Italy in recent months, with numerous cases of murder and violence. This unacceptable form of social barbarism requires more conscious action, rigorous, concrete and constant prevention”, Mattarella told the Corriere della Sère on the occasion of the Tempo delle Donne festival.

In Italy, almost 80 feminicides were recorded in 2023, as well as cases of gang rapes which had major repercussions in the country, especially those which occurred in Palermo and Caivano.

Elly Schlein, leader of the center-left Democratic Party (PD), recently commented that she had renewed her appeal to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to work together on the issue.

“I launched an appeal to Meloni on the topic of combating gender violence. Let’s put aside the usual harsh dialectic between majority and opposition, let’s try to work together not only on repression, but also on investment in education. If we don’t “If we don’t act immediately, I fear it will always be too late,” he said.
