BRASILIA, 08 SEPTEMBER – The interim president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), announced this Friday (8) in Brasilia an aid package for people left homeless due to the extratropical cyclone that hit Rio Grande do Sul.
The phenomenon has so far caused at least 42 deaths, and the number of missing has reached 46.
“To date, the government, through the Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, is allocating R$800 per person, and the money will be transferred to municipalities to help homeless families,” Alckmin said.
“All of this is a result of climate change, Lula is in India and one of the themes of the G20 summit is global warming and climate change,” Alckmin added.
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who is in New Delhi for the G20 summit, wrote on social media: “I instructed the government to stand by, promptly @gerarldoalckmin and our government ministers formed a committee permanent to support Rio Grande do Sul”.
