Felipe Bardi is the new Brazilian record holder in the 100 meter dash. With a time of 9.96, the athlete broke the 10-second barrier at the Trofeo Bandeirantes, an event managed by the Athletics Federation of São Paulo, in São Bernardo do Campo, held this Saturday (9). The weather should guarantee Bardi at the Paris Olympic Games next year. The athlete loses his position only if three other Brazilians run faster until the start of the competition.

The time achieved by the Brazilian could also become the South American record. In July this year, Issam Assinga of Suriname achieved a time of 9.89. However, the athlete was suspended for doping and it is expected that he will lose his record.

Bardi’s result shows the evolution of athletics in Brazil. In the same South American championship where Assinga broke the South American record, Brazilian Erik Cardoso became the first from the country to run under 10 seconds. At the time he finished the race in 9.97.

When it comes to world records in the 100 meters, Brazil still has a long way to go. The owner of the brand is one of the great legends of the sport: Usain Bolt. The Jamaican finished the race in 9.58 seconds in 2009.
