“I am Duncan MacLeod, born 400 years ago in the Scottish Highlands. I am immortal, as are a handful of chosen ones. For centuries we have waited for the hour of the final battle, when the sword cuts to its end. The head releases the rush, the power of the lightning. In the end, only one of us will survive.”
But how does the series end? Is McLeod, played by Adrian Paul, the last living immortal?
The finale is a double episode titled To Be (S06E12, “To Be” in the original version) and To Be Or Not To Be (S06E13, “To Be Or Not”). In this plot, Duncan McLeod must meet Liam O’Rourke, the immortal who sent him to prison in 1946. The latter is back for revenge and kidnaps Amanda, a friend (and more if relatives) McLeod. The latter begins his investigation with the help of the oldest myth from immortality.

Meanwhile, O’Rourke also kidnaps Dawson, the Lookout (an organization that controls immortals), and leaves McLeod with an address to go to.
Duncan decides to go to the meeting place alone, willing to let O’Rourke cut off his head to free his two friends. Methos intervenes before decapitating himself, but McLeod loses consciousness after being shot. He wakes up with his friend Fitz, who has become an angel.

The latter tells him that he is in an alternate universe in which he does not exist. Together they visit MacLeod’s friends, who point out that without him, his traveling companions have no clear fate:
- Amanda has become a black widow who kills her husbands one by one to get a lot of money and she kills.
- Dawson was left homeless after the Bystanders started killing him. He was killed by James Horton, who appeared in a dozen episodes of the series.
- Tessa left the statue for a settled life with her husband, whom she no longer loves, with whom she has two children. He is unhappy now.
- Methos was betrayed by his partner Jillian, who reported him to Horton. He lost his life in the operation. Methos escapes, but is consumed by hatred and only thinks of killing.
- Eventually, Richie falls into crime and works with Methos, who ends up killing him.

Methos and Rich
In this alternate universe, McLeod rescues Dawson, who has been captured by Methos and decapitates the Immortal. Once this is done, Fitz brings McLeod back to his reality.
In his world, McLeod apparently survived the bullets that wounded him and finds himself dueling with O’Rourke (Methos dropped out of the game). At the sound of the song, the face turns in favor of McLeod, who decapitates his opponent. Amazing grace.

Methos, Dawson and Amanda
McLeod promises himself once again not to kill a single human, immortal or not. What follows is a moving montage of images from the character’s past with a song by Bonnie Portmore in the background.
McLeod hugs Dawson, thanks Methos for proving that anyone can change, and declares his love for Amanda.
The hero disappears into the fog. The end of the series.

The last shot of the series
This finale was not well received by some fans, as the series’ initial promise of “only one left” was not fulfilled. McLeod resumes life while other immortals live around him, and not all of them are his friends. Fans will have to settle for this slightly disappointing version.
Although the series ended at his request in 1998, Adrian Paul would return to the place of Duncan McLeod in Highlander: Endgame (2000), then years later in Highlander – The Guardian of Immortality (2007).
