After seeing the end of the sixth season of the series, we compiled all the available information about the continuation in the form of a film.
The Peaky Blinders have said goodbye to television in the sixth season of the series (premiered on Netflix), but this farewell has a trick: A movie is already in the works that will continue the Shelbys’ story and answer questions left over from the series finale. Fans can breathe easy, because we will see Tommy and company again, and here we collect all the details: release date, synopsis, cast… And we will update it!
Created by Steven Knight for the BBC and distributed by Netflix in Spain, ‘Peaky Blinders’ follows the criminal plots of a Birmingham underworld gang, in England, operating under the leadership of Tommy Shelby (Cilliam Murphy). Throughout its six seasons we have experienced a multitude of confrontations with other mafias and personal dramas of all kinds, and we will continue to do so in the film.
However, two events have significantly changed the fate of history: the COVID pandemic and the death of Helen McCrory, which brought Polly to life. The first slowed down the shooting times for the sixth season and finally caused the cancellation of the seventh season of ‘Peaky Blinders’, which was planned before the arrival of a possible film. And the second, the death of the actress, happened in April 2021 just at the time of filming and led the writers to have to restructure the entire story without her character.
From now on and with the sixth season released, we will have to see how the story evolves. It’s all questions: When will the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie come out? And what would be its synopsis? And the distribution? Will the legendary Cillian Murphy be there or has he fallen by the wayside? We collect everything we have from this project.
‘Peaky Blinders’, the movie: release date
Unfortunately, There is still no confirmed release date for the ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie. What we can guarantee is that it will arrive, since the project is confirmed. now well… When? Based on previous release dates, we’ll have to wait until at least the second half of 2023.
Steven Knight said in 2021, when the project had not yet been confirmed, that “the line between film and television is blurred, or is blurred sometimes. I love making films, but as I say, I think that film can be based on the short story like television on a novel. I would think about making a film that Maybe it’s World War II”. There he already left us the first clues for the film.
‘Peaky Blinders’: would the movie be the end?
Knight initially wanted to end the series with season five, but luckily he decided to change his mind and lengthen the story. As he told at the time: “Originally we were going to end the series with this season. [la quinta], but I thought there are a lot of people that we are going to introduce now. It would be a shame to stop”.
Following the events of the pandemic, Knight stated on Deadline: “Covid changed our plans. But I can say that my plan from the beginning was to end Peaky with a movie. That’s what’s going to happen”. He added: “Part of the reason, it’s not because we’re going to change anything about how we do it. Hopefully by the time this movie comes out, these things are possible, the people who have made the show, the Peaky fans who have been so loyal and committed, they could sit down and watch it together. Hopefully a kind of community event, where people can sit down, watch it and enjoy it on the big screen.”
Also, the creator has previously claimed that the end will come with a very specific moment in history: with the first air raid siren in Birmingham in 1939. Given that the series has been planned from the beginning to cover the period leading up to World War II, it stands to reason that the plot of the film would cover the entire time leading up to the conflict, without going into it directly. It would certainly be an epic setup more than adequate to jump onto the big screen.
‘Peaky Blinders’, the movie: synopsis
One of Knight’s clear intentions, as has previously expressedis to “redeem” Tommy Shelby at the end of the story: “My intention has always been to redeem him so in the end he is a good man doing good things. Finding out how that happened tripwhy it happened, and dealing with all the post-traumatic stress of World War I”. Therefore, this change of path could be one of the axes of the plot of the film, and that in fact we have already begun to see in the end of the sixth season of the series.
But where would the story take place? You have to take into account the passing of the years. The characters of Tommy Shelby (Cillian Murphy) and Arthur Shelby (Paul Anderson) would be around 49 and 52 respectively by the time World War II begins, which would put them out of the draft pool, or at least early in the war. That is, that the two protagonists would not go to war, and therefore, the film would not be about the battle scenes, but rather that we would continue in Birmingham.
The relationship with the war could come from the hand of the younger protagonists: Finn, Ada’s son Karl Thorne, Tommy’s own son Charlie, and also his illegitimate son Duke . All of them would be of an age to become soldiers. After all, older people are well aware of the scars left by a war, so having to face the situation of seeing their own children going through the same experience could create an intriguing and ideal environment for the post-war disorder. -traumatic that Knight wants to continue trying to come back stronger than ever.
‘Peaky Blinders’, the movie: the cast
It is clear that we could not talk about ‘Peaky Blinders’ without Tommy Shelby. The character played by Cillian Murphy is the vital representation of the series, so if the film wants to maintain the connection with the series, her character will be present, to a greater or lesser extent. With the actor now also executive producing on the series, it stands to reason that he wouldn’t want to part with the story early.
Plus, we can look forward to the rest of the Shelby family.: Paul Anderson (Arthur Shelby), Sophie Rundle (Ada Thorne) and the newly recruited Conrad Khan (Erasmus, better known as Duke), Tommy’s illegitimate son. We also expect a big conflict with Harry Kirton (Finn Shelby), who has been kicked out of the family. And also the very villainous Sam Claflin (Oswald Mosley), who plays the fascist who has deceived Tommy and now may have to suffer his revenge.
We don’t know if we’ll ever see Natasha O’Keefee (Lizzie) again., which was not very much in favor of a movie a few years ago. “I think right now what would work would be the six-episode-per-season format, because it jumps over big stretches of time between seasons, and it works. You get a snapshot into their lives and then they’re gone. It could be a movie, but I think TV series is a better place right now. It’s one of the shows we should be really proud of and it works in this long form.”
Yes, it has been confirmed Stephen Graham’s character Hayden Stagg will appear in the film.
And also Polly. In statements to Radio Times, Steven Knight said, “Helen was so brilliant. Whenever something happened in the rest of the series, she wanted people to think, ‘What would Polly say?’ It’s like in a family, when someone passes away, her opinion stays in the house. Polly’s opinion is going to last.”
Knight also announced that there would be new signings: “What we want to do is keep surprising people and keep bringing out new talent. Because it’s all out there and there’s kind of a consistency: what we’re doing is finding really good working-class actors and telling that story.”.
