The Brazilian Filipe Toledo won his second world surfing championship on Saturday by beating the Australian Ethan Ewing, in two heats in the final of the World Surf League (WSL), in Trestles, California (USA), right where the athlete lives. The next stages of his career are the Olympics and the 2024 World Cup, competitions to which Filipinho guarantees to dedicate maximum attention, without necessarily favoring one.
“I will give my all at the Olympics and the World Tour. I feel at my peak, at my best. I have to take advantage of this moment. As long as I have the energy and the “I can do it for love, I will continue to do it. It will be an incredible year, being able to try for a gold medal and maybe another title,” he said at a press conference this Sunday.
In 2024, Filipinho will seek his third world championship and, if he wins another cup, he will equal Gabriel Medina, who leads the Brazilian success list with three titles (2014, 2018 and 2021). Adriano de Souza (2015) and Ítalo Ferreira (2019) are the other winners from Brazil.
Furthermore, next year Filipinho will also compete in the Paris Olympics. The athlete commented on the possibility of reaching the top of the rankings and being able to go in search of an unprecedented gold medal in his career.
“I really admire Gabriel, what he has done in surfing and to be able to match him would be incredible. There is still a lot of work to do, but one day we will get there, without a doubt. I think we (Filipe and Gabriel) will still compete in many heats for titles, so I think it’s going to be really amazing. At the same time, having the opportunity to try to win an Olympic medal is really amazing,” he said.
Filipe Toledo continued Brazil’s hegemony in surfing, winning the tournament for the second time in a row – the country’s seventh title, fifth in a row. In 2022, Filipinho beat compatriot Ítalo Ferreira, Olympic medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Even without the pressure of winning the title for the first time, the current WSL champion admitted he was more nervous in this Saturday’s match.
“Strangely, in the first one I think I was a lot calmer. In this one (in 2023), I was a little more nervous, but the positive side is that I wanted to compete. Last year I wasn’t too worried. This year I was more agitated, but it was good. I was able to stay calm, stay calm and do what needed to be done,” he concluded.
