Since its inception, Guillermo del Toro’s cinema has been populated by all manner of monsters. But he never looked at artificial intelligence, a subject that has terrified Hollywood for months and presents itself as one of the reasons for the current actors’ and writers’ strike.
Through at the Toronto Film FestivalA few months after winning the Oscar for best animated film thanks to Pinocchio, the director spoke at a conference about artificial intelligence.
“People ask me if AI bothers me, but I tell them it’s the natural stupidity that scares me. Because it’s just a tool, right?”Pan’s Labyrinth Director announces.
“If someone wants an AI movie, give it to them right away. I don’t care about people who want to be satisfied and get something crappy quickly.”

On paper, the filmmaker is not fundamentally opposed to the use of artificial intelligence. And it seems that he is not afraid of it anymore. But he confirms that its success or failure will depend on the human application and vision that will help (or not) develop on the screen. “Alternatively, why not buy a printer, print the Mona Lisa and say you created it?”
Guillermo del Toro is currently working on a live-action adaptation of Frankenstein for Netflix. Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield and Mia Goth will play the main roles in the film.
