Sunday evening’s result saw Serbian Novak Djokovic return to the top of the rankings for the tenth time in his career and enter the 390th week as leader. He is the greatest number 1 in history.

Djokovic scored 2000 points for the victory and was at 11795 against the 8535 of the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz who lost 2000 last year in New York and scored 720 in the semi-final of this edition. The difference of more than 3,200 points gives comfort to Djokovic, who has 2,750 to defend in this final part of the year with titles at the ATP World Finals, Astana and Tel Aviv and runner-up at the Masters 1000 in Paris, France. With little to defend, Alcaraz would need back-to-back titles to finish the year on top. Djokovic’s chances of reaching a staggering 400 weeks at the top are enormous.

Daniil Medvedev takes the lead and is less than 1,300 behind Alcaraz with 7,280 after the 1,200 in the US Open final. Holger Rune remained fourth, Stefanos Tsitsipas moved up two positions and completes the top five. Andrey Rublev moved up two positions to sixth, Jannik Sinner lost one and is seventh. Taylor Fritz is one ahead and eighth. Last year’s runner-up, Casper Ruud, has lost four times and is ninth. Alexander Zverev, who finished fourth, moved up two places and back into the top 10, closing out the group. Semifinalist, 20-year-old Ben Shelton, moved up to 28th and is 19th, making his top-20 debut.
