Even if it’s hard to imagine Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Without the dapper Spider-Punk (voiced by Daniel Kaluuya), the chaotic British superhero barely made it into the film. The production includes more than 250 different Spider-Men. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, the minds behind the animation, ended up making the character an essential part of Miles Morales’ (Shameik Moore) story – and thank goodness. So why was it so challenging to bring Spider-Punk to the big screen? This is what the site explains Collider.
A challenging character
Spider-Punk, also known by his civilian name Hobie Brown, is a relatively recent character in Marvel Comics. He was introduced in January 2015 in issue 10 of The Extraordinary Spider-Man. This version of Spider-Man from Earth-138 is a teenager who has nowhere to live. Like all the other Spider-Men, he is bitten by a radioactive spider and gains extraordinary powers.
However, Hobie chooses to be an “anarchist” Spider-Man, fighting the totalitarian regime led by the villain Ozzy Osborn (who is not the lead singer of Black Sabbath). Spider-Punk seems like a natural fit for the Spider-Verse films, but writer-producer Phil Lord and the creative team behind “Into the Spider-Verse” faced challenges incorporating it.
Phil Lord revealed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that it was difficult to decide which Spider-Men to use and which to save for the next film, Spider-Man: Beyond Spider-Verse.
However, when they met Daniel Kaluuya, they knew he was the ideal Hobie Brown and that the actor had to play a significant role in Miles’ story. The role of Spider-Punk was rewritten to be more involved in the plot, influenced by Kaluuya’s captivating energy and improvisational skills. Spider-Punk turned out to be the unlikely mentor Miles needed.

Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse: The scene took 4 years to make
If you’ve already looked Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, you probably walked out of the theater impressed with the look of the film. During a Q&A after the screening, one of the film’s co-creators revealed how long it took to complete just one scene: four whole years.
