Stranger Things: The director of the iconic episodes returns for the end of the series

We can rest assured about the success of the fifth season of Stranger Things. At least following the superstition of the producers. As in other seasons, Shawn Levy confirmed to the site Collisionr who will return to direct some episodes of the final phase of the Netflix series.

The director is known for producing some of the most acclaimed episodes of the series, such as Dear Billy” from season 4. In an interview with the ReelBlend Podcasthe said taking on the role wasn’t in the cards:

It all started in the first season, it was out of necessity. Nobody knew what we were doing. I had never produced television […] Little did I know that I would get lucky in some of the most iconic moments in television history.

Shawn Levy said

The idea was just to buy time so that the Duffer brothers, authors of the work and also directors, could finish writing the final episodes of the first season. But Levy did the job so well that it became a tradition from then on. Since then he has directed at least one episode of the thriller series.

You [Irmãos Duffer] they were these 31-year-old twins with the best script I’d ever made. The initial plan was that the brothers would direct them all, and as we were shooting episodes 1 and 2, it became clear, like, ‘Oh no, we haven’t finished the other scripts.’ So I basically said, “Okay, I’m going to go to Atlanta, do 3 and 4 just to buy you time to write episodes 6, 7, and 8,” or whatever.

Shawn Levy explained

One of the episodes in question became a milestone in the series. In it, Joyce uses the letters of the alphabet and Christmas lights to create a communication code with Will, who is trapped in the inverted world. Superstitious as they were, the rhetoricians preferred to continue with the tradition and let Levy deal with other episodes.

The first season went like that, and the brothers and I said, “Okay, you know what, don’t change anything.” For example, we are superstitious enough that we don’t want to mess with fate. And that’s why I always direct 3 and 4 in every season, including the upcoming one.

The director said.

When will the final season come out?

Due to the writers’ and actors’ strike, which lasted 3 months, Stranger Things and other productions were paralyzed. However, it was clear that planning for the series was in full swing. The release on Netflix is expected in 2025.
