Released in 1991 by Apogee Software (later to become 3D Realms), Duke Nukem is a franchise that started out as a computer platform game and has been in the works for a few years. The reasons for this move take into account the classic’s success and fame, which also has its unique mark in first-person games when Duke Nukem 3D was released in 1996.
Basically, Duke Nukem focuses on his main character, modeled after some attributes of 80s action heroes, complete with many slogans. He fights an alien invasion of Los Angeles, travels between strip clubs and movie sets to moonbases and spaceships, as he faces enemies such as mutated police officers to rescue women trapped in alien incubators and fight the Cycloid Emperor.
With the passage of time, between the tests for the making of a film based on the game, some doubts have arisen about how to sell a character with this “particular” tone. There were also some questions about intellectual property rights, which created a certain barrier to starting any Duke Nukem film production.
Counting on the success of Cobra Kai
But this week, Legendary Entertainment announced that it has acquired the rights to the franchise from Gearbox to actually produce a movie of the game. In addition to searches from a writer to handle the material, the American company (which has major productions like “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong”) hired Cobra creators Kai Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg for the film – Jean Julien Baronnet by Marla Studio is also on the team.
The move is well analyzed, given the huge success of the spin-off “Karate Kid” on Netflix, which has even received numerous Emmy nominations. Starring the original actors of the saga starting in 1984, the TV series even won a trailer for its fifth season – and the story shouldn’t stop there.
