The trailer presents the series inspired by the Oscar-winning short film

HBO Max has released the trailer for the animated series based on “Hair Love”, a production that won the Oscar for best animated short film in 2020. Director Matthew A. Cherry, who wrote, directed and produced the short film original, is responsible for the new attraction, called “Young Love”.

He worked with veteran animator Carl Jones (“The Boondocks,” “Black Dynamite”) to expand the world of the Young family, including parents Stephen and Angela, their young daughter Zuri and their cat Rocky.

The series adaptation

The original short’s uplifting plot followed an African-American father’s first attempt to do his daughter’s hair while his wife recovered from cancer treatment in the hospital. The idea for the project was born from Matthew’s desire to promote a love of black hair while countering the stereotype of the absent black father. The series will show the family’s daily life as they try to balance career, marriage, parenting, social issues and multigenerational dynamics, trying to achieve a better life.

The voice cast includes Kid Cudi (“Don’t Look Up”), Issa Rae (“Insecure”), Loretta Devine (“Grey’s Anatomy”), Harry Lennix (“The Blacklist”), Sheryl Lee Ralph (“Abbott Elementary” ), girlfriend Brooke Monroe Conaway (“Soul Santa”) and singer Tamar Braxton.

The origin of “Hair Love”

It is worth remembering that “Hair Love” was born as an independent production, created thanks to a crowdfunding campaign and came to fruition only thanks to the commitment of the director, who was an American football player before deciding to follow his passion for cinema. The short film is his first animated film, but he had already directed a feature film, “9 Rides” (2016), which won awards on the US indie festival circuit.

A month after winning the Oscar, “Hair Love” was acquired by Sony, which is behind the series project.

The premiere is scheduled for September 21st.
