It’s rare for TV series to be controversial before they even air, but Tapie definitely falls into that category. The new Netflix production stars Laurent Lafitte as Bernard Tap.
Although inspired by the famous businessman’s travels, successes, but also escapades, the Netflix series is not strictly speaking a biopic of the city’s minister during the presidency of François Mitterrand, also the former president of ‘Olympic Marseille’.
Each of the program’s six episodes opens with a warning card that insists on this “This series is loosely inspired by real events”. This message also highlights the liberties of certain characters, namely Dominique Tapie (her husband), played by Josephine Yap.
“exaggerating reality”
In an interview that he gave us, the creator of the series, Tristan Seguela, claims that his motivation for the development of this project comes from the desire to follow. “The way in which this personal fortune affected the destiny of this country (…) and the brilliance of this character.”
We had to choose what we thought was the most interesting and what trajectory to take for the characters. There’s always a point when a biopic, like fiction inspired by reality, has to go beyond reality, which is a bit like a Wikipedia timeline of facts, to become a portrait that belongs to us, which is our vision of the character and how we imagined a great character could be.
The fruit of nine years of work, the idea for this mini-series came to the director about 16 years on the set during a discussion with the main actor Laurent Lafitte.
Bernard Tappy voiced his opposition to the project shortly before his death from cancer on October 3, 2021. Several times, the series was publicly criticized by the ex-businessman’s entourage and family, although according to Tristan Seguela, they still intended to watch it.
The Tapie miniseries is now only available on Netflix.
