Six years after a disastrous fantasy failure, the director returns with a new thriller to forget his old disaster

In 2017, the Danish director frustrated Hollywood with a fantasy flop, but now he’s back.

Nikolaj Arcel is not a household name, but many have probably heard of his film, The Dark Tower (and few have seen it). The adaptation of Stephen King’s fantasy epic launched beautifully as a franchise starter in 2017, but flopped during the season. The film grossed just over $100 million. The reviews were disastrous.

Rumors about a turbulent post-production in the Variety publication didn’t exactly recommend Arcel for his next Hollywood project. We then return to Denmark, where Arcel brings together two people who learn to hate each other until they die. Bastarden, screened at this year’s Venice Film Festival, is a successful return and a welcome showcase for Mads Mikkelsen’s sharp eyes.

The gripping historical drama takes you to the year 1755, where officer Ludvig Kahlen (Mikkelsen) wants to ascend to good society after his military service. Without land and money, he has only one option: restore Jutland’s arid vegetation. Barren terrain, gangs of thieves and strong winds have derailed previous settlement attempts. Kahlen tries anyway and in doing so incurs the wrath of newcomer Frederik de Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg). The “de” in the name, of course, has just been purchased.
