Strange Barbie is inspired by David Bowie; understand

One of the most unusual characters in Barbiebut which was very prominent in the narrative of the film released on July 20, 2023, was Strange BarbieInterpreted by Kate McKinnon. Second Margot Robbiethis version of the iconic doll was inspired by none other than David Bowie.

In a video of the film, according to information from EntertainmentWeekly, Robbieresponsible for starring and producing Barbierevealed some details about the character of McKinnonespecially in her visual references.

“Greta [Gerwig, diretora] described the Strange Barbie in the script as a mix between David Bowie and a hairless cat. It’s so strangely accurate,” she said. Then the filmmaker added this line to Robbie.

“Strange Barbie is really the Barbie that you would play with too much. You would brush her hair and decide you wanted to cut it, then see what would happen if you set it on fire and drew it all over her face,” she said.

You put her in a room and try to change her clothes. I had this idea of, ‘Well, we need to have a Barbie that represents the destiny of so many Barbies.’ I wanted her to be funny and wise.

Finally, Gerwig highly praised the work of Kate McKinnon in Barbie: “I always thought she was the most talented person I’ve ever met. It was really special when we were on set together. It was a full circle moment.”
