If Jason Statham became an action hero, and even a gay action hero, it is thanks to the transporter saga. Between 2002 and 2008, the actor donned the guise of driver Frank Martin three times for some very muscular adventures.
The franchise then continued without him, first with a television series hosted by Chris Vance, then a fourth film hosted by Ed Skrein.
But why didn’t Jason Statham continue the Transporter saga? In A 2015 interview on the Vulture website, who recently revealed the reason behind his favorite action movie. And don’t put your tongue in your pocket…
“Making these films was a really great experience and I would love to continue”– says Jason Statham. “But they wanted me to sign on for three more movies when the script wasn’t written, and they were offering me less money for three movies than I was paying for one!”
“So it was just a business decision”continues the British actor. “I’d love to keep going, but you can’t really make three movies without a script, can you? And pay a pittance? I didn’t see what that could mean to me.”
Giving up the character of Frank Martin didn’t end up hurting Jason Statham’s career, quite the opposite. The actor, who recently starred in In Very Troubled Waters, then starred in two other very muscular franchises: Fast and Furious and Expendables.
He’ll also very quickly find the Expendables’ big guns for the fourth opus, which is slated to hit theaters on October 11.
