After the last season of Piste Noire and Balthazar, Constance Labbé will soon star in Cat’s Eyes, the next TF1 event series that adapts the famous cult cartoon from the 80s.
Although filming is set to begin very soon, the actor is currently a member of the jury at the La Rochelle Arts Festival, which will be held from September 12 to 17. In this case, Alocine met him to learn more about his vision for television, the role of a jury, but also his preparation for Cat’s Eyes.
Allocine: What do you like most about being a member of the La Rochelle Art Festival jury? Is this an offer you can’t refuse?
Constance Labe : I was very happy. I didn’t even ask myself if I was going to accept or not. I have been coming for a long time and I love this festival. There are festivals that are easier than others, more stressful than others, more depressing than others, but it’s really cool. I was delighted.
Does television play a big role in your life? Do you watch a lot of fiction?
Yes, more and more. I didn’t watch much before. But with the emergence of platforms, which directly affected the quality of series, I watch more. Platforms have really made it possible to mix a lot more. That’s why I watch a lot of TV series now.
The selection of the festival, as every year, is very rich. Do you have a favorite genre?
As a viewer, yes. But when you think about it, not really (laugh). I was going to say I don’t like thrillers, but actually there are thrillers that are great. So, no, I don’t have a favorite genre.
How will you evaluate the works in the competition?
I asked myself this question before I started looking at these works. And to be honest, I don’t have any criteria. At first I thought about how I would judge, then I let it go. I figured I’d just watch them and see what happens.
It is finally something very natural. When it’s good and when I feel emotions thanks to the actors, the production or the music, I celebrate it. The main thing is when you have memory. The memory remains. We tell ourselves we’ll forget because there’s a lot of fiction in the competition, but in reality we don’t at all. We do not forget when we are touched.
Do you already have outstanding fiction?
Yes, I already have favorites. I dream at night.
Over the past ten years, French fiction has experienced a boom in quality and boldness. Do you feel this in every project you are offered?
Yes. I even got an offer for horror fiction. I’m seeing diversity that wasn’t there before. As an actor, we don’t necessarily have access to everything because we think we’re cast in certain types of roles.
Early in our careers, we often have the same type of role that repeats itself. Then it’s up to us to try to diversify. But there is indeed more and more variation and diversification in genres and ways of treating things.
During interviews during the festival, Audrey Fleuro emphasized that women are playing an increasingly important role in fiction. Is this something you’ve noticed too?
Directly! I like it because in my last three series I played the main role and led the men. It’s great and that’s good.
Filming for Cat’s Eyes, the next TF1 event series, will begin in a few weeks. What attracted you to the project?
Many things. I think the collaboration between TF1 and Amazon is really cool. The fact that they are joining forces opens up many possibilities. The role also convinced me to participate in the show. It was interesting for me to play the sister who becomes a thief.
Working with Alexandre Laurent (Director, Editor’s Note) also pushed me to accept.. I have never worked with him. I haven’t worked with him yet, I’m going to in a few weeks. And finally, I think the fact of filming in Paris is great. We will shoot at the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower. This is an exception.
did you watch anime
No, I wasn’t looking at cat eyes, but I was looking at Nikki Larson, who has the same creator. So I knew little about the world. After getting the role of Cilia, I watched the anime. The TF1 version is an adaptation. It will not be the same story as the cartoon. In the series, we’re really going to do the genesis of the cat’s eyes. That’s why I don’t mind watching anime.
You will be playing a thief, so there will probably be stunts. Are you going to do physical training?
I started taking Aikido lessons with a great teacher. And all three of us are also going to practice climbing. And then we will have physical training on the side. It is a very sporty project.
Camille Lou and Claire Romain Play your sisters in the cat’s eyes. What did you think of this choice?
I really didn’t know at first. And when we first met Alexander, the producer, Claire and Camille, the three of us clicked immediately. And I told myself that the casting was well done. I believe in this. We had a way of talking and a shared energy and it was great.
Allocine exclusively revealed on Tuesday that Simon Ehrlacher, seen in Plus belle la vie, He was going to play the role of your companion in the series. Are you looking forward to working with him? especially since he was playing with your brother Guillaume Labein the series escort boys…
I am glad. I don’t know him. I never worked with him. But it’s confirmed by Guillaume, so that’s a big point ahead. We’ve worked with a lot of people in common, so I know he’s a great teammate. So I’m excited to play with him.
Balthazar ended in February 2023 on TF1. Since then, there have been rumors of a possible spin-off centering on the hero’s daughter. Have you heard about it? Maybe you’ll show up there?
I don’t know about this project. But if it’s about Balthazar’s daughter, a priori, no, because she would be an adult and would need a lot of makeup to integrate into my series (laugh).
What are your next projects besides Cat’s Eyes?
Nothing has been confirmed yet, so I don’t want to talk about it without paying attention. I am also a screenwriter and I am currently writing a film for France Télévisions as well as a TV series. The film will be a psychological drama, but I can’t say more about that at the moment.
