Sean Penn is questioning the public response after the assault of Will Smith The Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars. At last year’s ceremony, the actor took the stage and slapped Rock after comments about Jada Pinkett Smith.
In a new interview with Variety, Penn criticized the people who ‘crucified’ the actor after the attack, calling for his expulsion from future projects in the film industry.
So why the hell did you spit on him and everyone else with this stupid thing? Why did I go to f***ing prison for what you just did? Why are you standing around and applauding his worst moment as a person?”
When I was 26 years old in 1987, Penn was sentenced to 60 days in prison after punching and spitting on an extra on the film’s set Colorsreported the Los Angeles Times in season. He served 33 days of his sentence.
The actor has had several other allegations involving altercations, including in 2010, when he was sentenced to three years’ probation and 300 hours of community service after attacking a photographer, according to the LA Times.
Smith has since apologized for his Oscar outburst and resigned from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scienceswhich banned him from participating in its events for 10 years.
On July 29, the actor published an almost six-minute video on his YouTube channel talking about the episode, calling his behavior “unacceptable”. The actor also apologizes to the comedian’s mother and family.
