Five years have passed since the events of the first part. After being freed from the giant dragon, his fellows now live in peace and harmony with the Vikings of Berk, who adopted them. While dragons and humans help each other and live together, Hiccup and Toothless, who were the first to establish friendship between their two species, continue to explore the world.
But during one of the expeditions, the two adventurers have a most disturbing encounter: a group of trappers who respond to the orders of a certain Drago Poinsanclant, a great warrior whose goal is to enslave the dragons.
While he’s trying to find this mysterious enemy to see why, Hiccup makes another discovery: a secret cave inhabited by countless new dragons, led by a strange masked figure.
Among the 44 animated feature films produced by the Dreamworks studio (from their first film released in 1998 to date), quite simply, three steps of the podium are held by the three parts of the Dragons saga.
Adapted from Cressida Cowell’s children’s novels and initiated in 2010 by director Dean DeBlois, this trilogy (soon to experience a new boom in cinema) is therefore an AlloCiné audience favorite (followed by Boots 2, Shrek and Five Legends). .
The second part of the franchise, released in 2014, is certainly not the best-rated opus of the three (4212 stars out of 5 compared to the first’s 4287. dragons and 4,232 for Dragons 3), but it still remains one of the studio’s top films to discover on Amazon Prime Video for subscribers to the platform (the other two installments are currently only available for purchase or rental).
If Dragons 2 no longer enjoys the surprise that its predecessor created, and if the third part of the saga remains in the eyes of many fans the most moving of the three, this intermediate opus remains of excellent quality and knows how to stand out by revealing unexpected qualities.
Much more “adult” than the first film, as we can see just by observing the characteristics of our heroes (who have grown a lot in the last five years), Dragons 2 also takes a giant leap technologically. The aerial chase scenes (enhanced by James Newton Howard’s masterful soundtrack) already made the audience’s hair stand on end in 2010, but the artists at Dreamworks studio are clearly second best in this new adventure, much more dizzying.
Even in terms of world, issues, and geography, the world sketched out in Dean DeBlois’ first film expands, stretches, and evolves. Here we witness real battles, epic and visually spectacular, almost worthy sequences that we can find in live action Gladiator or Lord of the Rings.
However, even in this big world with more impressive challenges, Dragons 2 does not forget its origins and its main strengths: the beautiful story of the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless, the latter’s irresistible design and emotion, always masterfully measured by Dreamworks. artists.
