The Who will release the lost album featuring previously unreleased recordings from over 50 years ago

One of the last great lost and unreleased albums of the golden age of rock, “Life House”, the mythological album by the band The Who, will finally come to light more than 50 years after its recording. The work is released in a 10-CD package, accompanied by a book full of facts and photographs, requiring at least six CDs to read.

The ambitious release brings more than the lost album. It covers the period from 1970 to 1972, including songs from an abandoned EP and a discontinued second album, “Rock Is Dead”, which later morphed into “Quadrophenia”, the band’s next masterpiece.

The concept of “House of Life”

Conceived as a sequel to “Tommy”, “Life House” delves into the concepts of Eastern religion and musical philosophy. The project also included the release of a film, as had happened with “Tommy” and as would later happen with “Quadrophenia”. The plot would follow a band rebelling against a totalitarian society of the future, where everyone is connected by something called “The Grid”, which would be the Internet before the concept existed. But halfway through recording, the project was shelved, leading instead to the release of the 1971 classic “Who’s Next.”

Guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend faced several challenges in the making of “Life House,” including his bandmates’ lack of understanding of the connection between music and spirituality, and he also had difficulty creating the accompanying film.

The fate of songs

Despite the frustration and complete abandonment of the project, the “remnants” ended up in “Who’s Next”, considered one of the greatest rock albums of all time. Some of the album’s most popular tracks were part of the sci-fi/mystical story of “Life House,” including hits “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” which reflect the abandoned narrative.

The chi in the “Life House” box set.

For fans willing to shell out $299.99 for the box set, the reward is significant. The set features 155 tracks, including songs, demos and two complete concert recordings from 1971. The set also offers an intimate look at Townshend’s exploration of primitive synthesizers and sound loops, which would influence popular music for decades to come .

The release of “Life House” serves not only as a relic for die-hard Who fans, but also as an in-depth study of Townshend’s artistic vision and ambitions. The box will be available to the public starting next Friday (9/22).

Discover all the tracks from the project below, which include the remastered version of “Who’s Next”, the demo tapes of “Life House”, the official recordings of the unreleased album, excerpts from “Rock Is Dead”, shows from the time and much more.
