HBO cancels ‘Lakers: Time to Win’ after two seasons

HBO has canceled the series “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” after two seasons. The news came to light moments after the season two finale aired on Sunday night (9/17).

Co-creator Max Borenstein (writer of “Godzilla”) shared his thoughts on the news on X (formerly Twitter): “Not the ending we had in mind. But nothing but gratitude and love.”

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in late August, director Salli Richardson shared hopes for a third season given how the finale plays out. “Obviously, you see how the season ends. So we’d like to at least have, even if we can do this for years, one more season so the Lakers can beat the Celtics. We don’t want to end up with the Celtics winning. That would be horrible,” he said .

The series was produced by director Adam McKay (director of “Don’t Look Up”) and recreated with impeccable images and a comic tone the golden era of the Los Angeles Lakers team, which dominated basketball over the years ’80.

The plot showed how a businessman named Jerry Buss managed to revolutionize the entire sport in 1979 by putting together an extremely popular and winning team, led by a rookie named Earvin “Magic” Johnson. John C. Reilly (“Kong: Skull Island”) plays Buss and newcomer Quincy Isaiah is Magic Johnson.

The cast also included newcomer Solomon Hughes as another basketball legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, as well as Adrien Brody (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) as champion coach Pat Riley, as well as Jason Clarke (“ The Terminator: Genesis”), Sally Field (“The Amazing Spider-Man”), Hadley Robinson (“Moxie”), Rob Morgan (“Mudbound”), Jason Segel (“How I Met Your Mother”), Michael Chiklis ( “Fantastic Four”) “) and many others.
