Warning – The following article contains spoilers for Gone Girl as it discusses key elements of the thriller. So please go ahead if you haven’t seen a David Fincher movie yet.
Released in cinemas in October 2014, David Fincher’s feature film Gone Girl, which aired last week on France 2, tells the story of a man’s struggle to find his missing partner. This intense work, the shooting of which was stopped for four days due to ridiculous capital and for which Rosamund Pike had to follow a special diet, caused a lot of debate, especially regarding its conclusion. Here we decode the ending of the movie for you.
Amy (Rosamund Pike) is not dead as many, including her husband, thought. He actually manipulated his world by simulating his own murder in order to get revenge especially for Nick’s (Ben Affleck) betrayal. After killing Des (Neil Patrick Harris), she manages to plead guilty to kidnapping and rape, claiming self-defense.
Nick, released from prison, does not believe in the innocence of his partner, but without proof of guilt and under the pressure of public opinion, nevertheless, with great concern, decides to remain in a relationship with him. Amy finally confesses to him about Desi’s murder, and delivers the other big news: she’s pregnant by him.
In the last scene of Gone Girl, the couple pretends to be happy at the reporter’s microphone, but looks are deceiving (remember that the book from which the film is adapted is called appearance). Nick, unwilling to abandon his future child, feels obligated to stay with Amy. He is trapped, bound hand and foot in this relationship with Amy, who has taken control and whom he fears. What will be the future of this couple whose new present has been “restored” by manipulation? Will Nick get his revenge? Viewers are free to imagine what their daily lives will be like from now on…
In the end, it’s the last shot of Gone Girl that counts the most. It’s identical to the first one in the movie, but with a different shade of color, and that’s what sets it apart (and sends chills down your spine).
At the very beginning of Gone Girl, when Amy returns to the viewer, the colors are cold and she looks unhappy. But in the last shot the colors are more vibrant and now she looks happy and peaceful. A final image that makes us believe that his plan worked and won. An opportunity to point out that after seven, David Fincher once again makes the hero who does evil a winner.
The feature film Gone Girl, David Fincher’s last film to hit theaters, was a huge success in France with nearly 2 million viewers. The American filmmaker is preparing to return to the spotlight Thriller The Killer, which will be available November 10 on Netflix.
