“I’ve Never Seen Anything Like It”: David Fincher’s Marvel, It Was Almost Happening Until Seven!

As a guest on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer, looking back on his career. As Variety recalls, while working on the Batman and Superman movies, he wrote three Blade movies with Wesley Snipes and even directed the third opus, Blade: Trinity. During the interview, he also confirmed that he was originally working with David Fincher on the Blade project…

I did a rough draft with Fincher before he did Seven. I think he did Alien 3 and maybe he was developing Seven. I made an outline with him. I remember walking into our production office… it was a giant conference table. Fincher published 40 to 50 photographs and art books with Post-it notes inside. He said, “It’s a movie.”

He follows: “He took us on a two-hour tour around the table, the aesthetics of this scene, this character. It was such a powerful visual pitch… I’ve never seen anything like it before. Much of this thinking influenced my later edits.“

Compete with MARVEL at all costs

The screenwriter also talked about DC’s strategy and agreed with podcast host Josh Horowitz that Warner Bros. should have developed an independent sequel Iron man with Henry Cavill instead of trying to create a cinematic universe with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. He said Warner did it to compete with Marvel.

“I knew the pressure we were getting from Warner Bros. who said, “We need our own MCU! We need our own MCU!’ And I said to myself, “Let’s not run before we walk.”“, he recalled.
