Although we expected Anatomy of the Fall to appear at the Oscars, it ended up being Dodin Buffett’s Passion, the best director prize at the recent Cannes Film Festival, which was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. But in the meantime, the 2023 Palme d’Or is not far behind and continues its little (long) journey at the box office.
While not all Palme d’Or awards are necessarily popular successes, some still manage to establish themselves at the box office. Since the Cannes Film Festival began in 1946, 10 of the 76 Palms awarded have been awarded to a French film and 34 have exceeded a million holidays in French cinemas… and now 35!

Anatomy of a Fallwhich won the Palme d’Or last May, is followed by Bong-joon Ho’s Parasite, the latest Palme d’Or to surpass the milestone in 2019 with 1.7 million theatergoers in France.
Justin Triet’s film is almost on par with Abdellatif Kechiche’s La Vie d’Adèle (1.036 million admissions in 2013) and may yet catch up with Laurent Cante’s Entre les Murs (1.6 million admissions in 2008). However, the feature film outperforms – and significantly – the last French Palme d’Or titan Julia Ducournau (306,293 admissions in 2021), as well as Jacques Audiard’s Dheepan (663,000 admissions in 2015).
Let us remind you that the film tells about Sandra, Samuel and their visually impaired 11-year-old son, Daniel, who live far away from everything in the mountains. One day Samuel was found dead at the foot of their house. The investigation is open. Suicide or Murder: Sandra is charged despite suspicion. A year later, Daniel witnesses his mother’s trial and the true autopsy of the couple his parents created.
