Jade Beatriz and Karla Boughoff publicized the verbal attack on their social networks and filed a police report
The president of the Brazilian Union of Secondary Students (Ubes), Jade Beatriz, and her girlfriend, photographer Karla Boughoff, reported being victims of homophobia in a bakery in Vila Mariana, in the south of St. Paul. The case occurred last Thursday, the 21st, and was reported on both of their social networks.
Jade said she and her girlfriend were holding hands in the checkout line at the bakery when they noticed a man staring at them. According to Jade, “the citizen came in and felt entitled to question our sexuality.” In a video they released, a man appears who says they are together “for lack of p.”, among other insults.
“We never think it could happen to us until it happens,” Jade said in a video posted to Instagram. “It’s very bizarre to think that we can’t go to the bakery and have a minute of peace.”
The two have filed a complaint with the police and said they “intend to take appropriate legal action”. “Homophobia is a crime,” Jade said.
In 2019, in fact, the Federal Supreme Court (STF) equated LGBTphobia to the crime of racism, as provided for by law 7716/1989.
The man’s identity was not revealed.
