Sound of freedom was filmed in 2018, with funding from Mexican investors, by the small production company Angel Studios. The plot is based on the stories of Tim Ballard, former special agent for Homeland Security in the USA. In 2013, Ballard led “Operation Underground Railroad,” a group whose mission was to rescue children from traffickers in a sexual exploitation ring.

However, Ballard himself has been accused of sexual harassment. According to the magazine Vicehe was accused by seven women of forcing them to sleep in the same bed or shower with him.

The former agent denies the allegations, but was dismissed after internal investigations. The circumstances of his departure are unclear.

The controversy in the United States

In the United States, marketing for the film has already begun quite robustly: the film’s trailer itself ends with an encouragement to pre-order tickets to “send the message that God’s Children is no longer for sale.”

The film is currently the tenth highest-grossing film of the year in the country, surpassing successes like new franchise films Transformers AND Fast & Furious.

In the last month the North American press has wondered how many of these extra tickets are actually being used and whether they are excessively increasing the film’s sales. Production company directors deny there is inflation in the numbers.

There are also controversies linked to the names involved in the film: the actor Jim Caviezel, who plays the main role in the film, and himself Tim Ballard are associated with QAnonfar-right conspiracy group.

The film has become well-loved by names on the American right, such as Jordan Peterson, political commentator Ben Shapiro and former President Donald Trump himself, who reportedly showed the film at his golf club.
