Not since William Shakespeare has Kenneth Branagh been inspired by an author like Agatha Christie. In “Secretary of Venice,” which hit our theaters on Wednesday, September 13, the actor and director sign the third adaptation of the novel by the queen of suspense. And maybe not the last.
At least that’s what is being suggested in the interview given varietyProduced by Judy Hofflund, who worked with Kenneth Branagh on three installments of the franchise: “not yet”he says. “But there’s been a discussion about what they want to do next. I know what I want next, but I can’t say what it is.”
It would be surprising if it didn’t add an extra layer of mystery to a saga that relies on this element (besides the murder). And we don’t have to rely on the latest movie to inform us.
The end of Crime on the Orient-Express at least announced the departure of the Belgian detective to Egypt (and thus the Nile). And we saw the cover of the novel “Pumpkin Festival” (Republished under the title “Halloween Crime” in 1999 and which inspired Mystery in Venice) in Belfast, his autobiographical and Oscar-winning interlude in black and white. But there is nothing here.
To kill in the sun?
Perhaps because Mystère à Venise’s box office performance will depend on the resources allocated to the next film and therefore on what can be filmed. Or because Kenneth Branagh is spoiled for choice among the thirty-three novels and eight stories in which Hercule Poirot appears.
Will it fit? “The Feast of Hercule Poirot”Which spawned the 1982 film Murder in the Sun, one of six Peter Ustinov feature films, including Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile?
or “Poirot leaves the stage”, which marks the death of a character, and can Kenneth Branagh once and for all close this detective bracket (but marked with seriousness) to his career as an actor and director? Better go back to Shakespeare after that?
