This has connected the new Marvel series with ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.
Spoilers for chapter 1 of ‘Ms. Marvel’
Ms. Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has had her powers on for less than 24 hours in ‘Ms. Marvel’, and she’s already caught the attention of some pretty big people. Of course, we’re talking about that sneaky little post-credits scene, the one where you never know when she’ll show up in a Marvel product. You just know that sooner or later she will come.
In the case of ‘Ms. Marvel’ she did in episode one. If you missed it or misunderstood the seriousness of the problem Kamala has gotten herself into, then don’t worry, that’s what we’re here for. Fast-forward past Kamala’s euphoric decision to be ‘cosmic’ (and by that we mean disobeying her mother’s wishes and continuing down the path of reverie that leads to the discovery of her powers), where we find the scene in question, after a couple of minutes of credits.
In it, we see the return of Agent P Cleary (Arian Moayed) from the DODC. Who or what is the DODC? We’ll get to that in a minute.
His colleague Deever (Alysia Reiner) receives a video on his phone showing Kamala using her powers at Avenger Con. Deever shows this clip to Cleary, who agrees that her powers are unusual and suggests that they “bring her in” . What they want with Kamala could have disastrous consequences for her superhero journey. This is why.
What is DODC?
The DODC (or Department of Damage Control) is a United States organization that began life under the leadership of SHIELD after the Chitauri invasion. His job was to repair what the Avengers broke in the line of duty before changing affiliations to report under the US government. Currently, his main job description seems to include seizing alien artifacts and arresting people with Special powers.
Where have we seen them before?
The DODC’s involvement in the MCU began in ‘Iron Man,’ with a brief mention of Pepper Potts after the events of the film. She claims that the organization had already contacted them after Tony’s escape.
They were also mentioned in the television series ‘Agents of SHIELD’ during Watchdog’s reign of terror in the third season. However, her relationship with Stark seemed to mature over the years, elevating his status to more than mere mentions.
During ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, they were tasked with retrieving powerful alien technology from Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton) and his team under the instructions of Stark Industries. This act is what prompted Toomes to confront the villain, aka Vulture, and we all know how that ended.
However, more recently, after their union with the government, they appeared in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. They used forceful tactics in an attempt to scare Peter and company into confessing to the murder of Quentin Beck, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio. For Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), it was a reckless attempt to frame a child, while Ned (Jacob Batalon) was forced to “confess to being an accessory to Spider-Man’s surveillance activities.” Phew! They got very, very bad. Fortunately, Daredevil/Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) stepped up and saved the day with his legal skills, at least when it came to those accusations.
What does the arrival of the DODC mean for Kamala Khan?
The DODC appearing in ‘Ms Marvel’ is not good news for the newly crowned superheroine. Kamala has barely gotten the training wheels off her motorized bike and now she has some serious stuff to deal with. We know the DODC cares about arresting people with powers, but what for? We also know that she has a deep interest in things of extraterrestrial origin, which lends more weight to Kamala’s true origin story.
It’s been theorized (by us) that Kamala’s Inhuman heritage is creeping into the MCU. It is believed that the bracelet passed to her through her grandmother might be what triggered her terrigenesis (inhuman transformation of her) from her. If this is true, she would turn the bracelet into an alien artifact, and maybe that’s what has piqued Cleary’s interest.
Considering how nasty they got on Peter and his squad, we’d assume the same heavy-handed treatment is in store for Kamala. Without the backing and resources Peter has in his way from Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau), Matt Murdock and even the supportive Aunt May, Kamala will have a tougher battle on her hands.
‘Ms Marvel’ is now available on Disney +, with new chapters every Wednesday.
