After 148 long days of strike, Hollywood screenwriters are officially back. The American union has declared the end of the strike starting from midnight this Wednesday (27th). In other words, projects should resume full swing soon.
The strike, which became known as the “Hollywood strike”, began on May 2 and became the longest in the history of American industry. Negotiations to end the protests lasted five days and we finally have a preliminary agreement.
What will change with the Hollywood strike agreement?
In an upbeat email to members late Sunday, the WGA’s bargaining committee called the deal “exceptional,” highlighting “incredible benefits and protections for writers in every corner of our team.” But it wasn’t just about victories: they had to accept lower-than-expected pay increases.
Additionally, as part of this deal, streaming companies will have to disclose how many hours people spend watching their original shows. Then, starting next year, they will have to give teams a bonus if the show or movie attracts the attention of at least 20% of their subscribers in the first 90 days. And when it comes to AI, everyone is on the same page: AI cannot write scripts and therefore the material created by AI does not have a legitimate origin.
Finally, the last agreement was about the number of people in the writers’ rooms. Under this new contract, the minimum number of writers will have to be consistent with the number of episodes of a show, unless one person writes all the episodes. So, for example, a six-episode show needs at least three writers, and a 10-episode show needs at least five.
Adam Conover, a board member of the writers’ union, hailed the deal with the production companies as “the biggest victory we’ve seen in years.” Now we will see the projects return to action after almost five months of strike. Woohoo!
