In 2019, Netflix bet on Kerry James and produced her first feature film. Along with writer and co-director Leila Sai, the Guadeloupe rapper was inspired by his song Banlieusards and delivers a sometimes dark and sometimes bright portrait of the French cities of his brother Suleiman (Jame Diangana), a law student in Paris. Demba, the elder, who lives in the rhythms of the traffic and the street, and their little brother Numuke (Bakari Diombera), who is still finding his way.
Banlieusards was able to meet its audience on the streaming platform. With a rating of over 4/5 at the time of its release on AlloCiné, the feature film was one of the highest-rated French films on Netflix in 2019. If we add to that quite good viewership figures, the announcement of a sequel made sense.
Cary James and Leila Sy took 4 years to write and film Banlieusards 2, which subscribers can watch now on Netflix. This new film marks the return of the three Traore brothers to our screens.
This time, the rapper changes the angle and focuses his story on the character of Demba (whom he portrays), who survived the assassination attempt at the end of the first part. Now settled and at the helm of his own business, he and his brothers struggle to “escape a daily life of betrayal, revenge and violence in the suburbs of Paris,” the synopsis says.
Bacary Diombera, Jame Diangana and Kerry James return for Banlieusards 2
Casting-wise, Chloe Juanette, Dali Bensalah, and Mathieu Kasowitz all make appearances, Banlieusards 2 especially welcomes Alessandra Sublette and actress/rapper Coffs. As in the case of the first part, the interpreter of Banlieusards accompanied the release of his film with new original compositions. Two titles have already been uploaded to his YouTube channel.
Banlieusards 2 is now available on Netflix.
