The Bollywood version of Christopher Nolan? It exists! Discover the Indian remake of Oppenheimer’s landmark film

Christopher Nolan is a major figure in the Hollywood landscape, with classics such as The Dark Knight, Inception, Interstellar and the recent Oppenheimer. A leading director whose work inspires…even in India!

Memento, Nolan’s second feature about an amnesiac man (Guy Pearce) who searches for the man who raped and killed his wife, was adapted into Bollywood in 2008 with Ghajini, a thriller directed by AR Murugadoss.

Memento, which was so popular with AlloCiné audiences, even received two Indian remakes, this Hindi-language ghajini itself adapted from an earlier work of the same name by the same director, but in Tamil.

To recap: Memento first had a Bollywood remake in 2005 (since it was from the South Indian film industry) directed by actor Suriya, and then a Bollywood version produced in Mumbai three years later. Two films that were very successful at the domestic box office.

Bollywood Ghajini is a masala film, which means that it combines several genres, in this case action and romance. Over three hours long, this long work stars actor Aamir Khan, who plays Sanjay, a man with anterograde amnesia.

Sanjay remembers only the last fifteen minutes that have passed. But he remembers one thing, the name: Ghajini. And he’s willing to do anything to get revenge on the man who lost everything…

“I heard that the 2008 Indian remake was very successful and people loved it.”says the British filmmaker, whose Dark Knight Rises was shot for several days in India. “I’ll watch it one day. I knew it was a remake and I’m honored.”
