“I’m writing what I think is fiction, for the most part, trying to keep it as true to real life as possible, but I’m exaggerating and dramatizing. And to hear a former president say that you got a little bit wrong on some details… I thought that I was making a big mistake! The fact that he said that scared the shit out of me.”

Esmail added: “He had a lot of notes about the characters and the empathy that we would have for them. I have to say that he is a film lover, and he wasn’t making notes about things that are part of his background. He was taking notes like a fan of the book and wanted to see a really good movie.”

The film is based on the book of the same name, by Rumaan Alamand the reading was included in one of the famous lists of Obama in 2021. Esmailhowever, tried to change the focus of the narrative: “The disaster genre is one of my favorite genres, and the trick we did in this film, which differs from most disaster films, is that, in this genre, the focus – the priority of narrative – it’s in the scenarios.”

“It’s the spectacle of whatever the disaster is for that story, and the characters were secondary to that. They’re there more to react and become the audience’s avatar. Which I think Rumaan did so well in the novel, and What I tried to capture in the film was to reverse that and make the focus be on the characters and their reactions. The spectacle of the disaster is secondary and distant.”
