It is often said that video game adaptation is synonymous with disaster. However, there are examples of adaptation that are exceptions to this general observation.
And among these successful adaptations, it’s hard not to think of the animated series Castlevania, which ran on Netflix from 2017 to 2021, for a total of four seasons and 32 episodes.
This program is an adaptation of a video game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and its sequel Castlevania: Curse of DarknessBoth are published by the famous Japanese company Konami.
Set in the 19th century, the series follows several heroes – a vampire hunter, a sorcerer and a half-human, half-vampire warrior – teaming up to thwart the demonic plans of Vlad Dracula Tepes, who is determined to wipe out all of humanity. Execution of her lover for witchcraft.
Anime that Netflix subscribers love
The popularity of the Castlevania series is explained both by the quality of its animation and general art direction, memorable soundtrack, convincing interpretations (emphasis in VO and VF), as well as stylized and uncompromising violence. .
With an audience rating of 4.1 out of 5, Castlevania is unsurprisingly among Netflix’s highest-rated animated series on AlloCinĂ© (but it’s no surprise that it’s the Arcane series that dominates this rating, with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5).
Success demands, Castlevania’s story obviously couldn’t end after only four seasons. But it’s in the form of an all-new series that the show returns this Thursday, September 28, with an official spin-off airing called Castlevania: Nocturne.
Although set in the same universe, this new series is not strictly speaking a sequel to Castlevania, but rather a prequel. These are indeed new protagonists who play the main roles in this story, which takes place during the French Revolution, several decades before the plot of the original series.
Castlevania: Nocturne features Richter Belmont, the heir to a famous clan whose last representative was Trevor Belmont, the protagonist of Castlevania. Note that this new series is adapted from a video game Castlevania: Round of Blood and its sequel Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
The Castlevania series and its spin-off Castlevania: Nocturne can be found on Netflix now.
