In the bath of excess and provocation The Boys knew well, added to the euphoria surrounding superheroes, success was guaranteed. After three seasons – and a fourth already filmed but not yet announced – the series continues with a new project, General V. This time, a change of scenery and location to Godolkin University, a college that trains tomorrow’s superheroes.
We move from adults to teenagers and the recipe still works there. It’s even nicer. Beyond its still languid tone, its easy jokes and its nonsensical effects, the series offers a plot shrouded in mystery. The students are forcibly taken to the basement of the institution and rumors spread around.forest“. What does it contain and what are the dangers for students? It’s all up to the characters – and the audience – to figure out.
As with The Boys, one of General V’s interests lies in its characters’ extravagant powers. Interestingly, each of their skills reflects the difficult trials that can be experienced during adolescence. The main character, Marie, must mutilate herself to release her blood, which is her weapon. Her neighbor, Emma, has to vomit to make her shrink. Jordan Lee has the ability to change gender, much to the dismay of his family. An eating disorder, a search for identity… the metaphor is not exactly subtle, but it’s still interesting.

Of course, General V also has its share of shocking scenes, from the first scene of the first episode, in which the heroine’s period disrupts – and that’s not saying enough – the course of her life. We also think about this unusual sex scene where a student asks his classmate to use his super power to masturbate him. Needless to say, you have to see it to believe it.
In fact, we quickly resist this false diversionary effect, which too often seems forced. With its convincing casting and its beautiful visual effects, Gen V has many other qualities that shine and overshadow its original model. It’s a good start.
Gen V is available on Prime Video.
