The greatest name in Brazilian literature, Machado de Assis left an immense legacy to the country. For this reason he continues to be read and reread more than a century after his death.
“A great writer is precisely the one who knows how to write a text of such complexity that that text continues to make sense for many years, for many generations of readers”, he evaluates Hélio de Seixas Guimarães, professor of the Literature course at USP and editor of the online magazine Machado de Assis, in an interview with the Jornal da USP. For him, the Wizard of the Old Cosme it is the greatest Brazilian example in this sense, because it continues to impose a “permanent challenge” on its readers.
