What are you talking about?
In Manila, Joey lives with his six-year-old daughter Angel and his wife, a petty criminal, Dante. At night Dante often comes home drunk and severely beats Joy. When he hurts the angel too, Joey asks the local police to intervene to send this unworthy father to jail. But Joey finds that justice is not easy …
A captive sink in a universal battle
Following his short film Judgment, which he presented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018, Verdict is the first feature film by Raymond Riba Gutierrez. Here, the Filipino director plunges us into a woman struggling to acknowledge the mistakes of her abusive husband. All this is still against the background of institutions governed by patriarchal traditions.
Beyond the universal theme and always and always relevant, the verdict shines with its fascinating and documented products, offering us a real immersion in a fascinating ordeal. On screen, Max Eigenman impresses as Joey Santos, the heroine determined to defend her rights, carries her daughter in her arms to surrender to the police as soon as a violent argument with her husband begins.
The feature film only manages to show the whole system under high tension for 2 hours, far from the plot of violence and without getting into the pure manicure narrative, without forgetting to take care of the documentary style, staging and photography.
Director Brylante Mendoza’s first film, which won the Kinatai Direction Award at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, has received more than 10 awards at fifteen international film festivals. In September 2019, he was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 76th edition of the Venice Film Festival (the one that awarded the Joker the Golden Lion).
An exciting and thought-provoking film, Now you can only watch it on FILMO.
