If there’s one sequel that everyone disliked in the world of blockbusters, it’s The Matrix Reloaded! Initiated by the Wachowski sisters in 1999, this second installment of the Matrix saga was released twenty years ago in May 2003.
Zion comes under attack from an army of machines, and 250,000 Sentinels prepare for a final assault that will wipe out the human race and this last refuge. Neo, having learned to control his extraordinary abilities, officially becomes a providential being, the chosen one to lead humanity to victory.
If the average ratings for movies on AlloCiné aren’t disastrous, 3.7 out of 5 for The Matrix 2 and 3.5 for The Matrix 3 compared to the first opus’s 4.4 out of 5 is a noticeable drop in viewership. This is explained by the fact that although most people are amazed by the special effects, they blame the pretentious story.

Chakkar sums it up: “The Wachowskis pulled off such a miracle that we doubted they could do better. And our doubts were justified. Before we get into the details, we can already say that this sequel is a good movie, but a little disappointing compared to its predecessor.”. An opinion shared by the frog: “Where George Lucas knew how to add dimension to his mythology with his sequels, the Wachowskis plunged into a grotesque vein drowned out by so many visual effects that they were irrelevant.”

“For me he is the best of the three”Counterargument Diane M. “How could we stop at 1? So many questions left unanswered! (…) Obviously, it’s much more complicated. But that’s what makes it more interesting than the other two for my taste.” Without qualifying it as a masterpiece, Themistocle_480 aims to: “A great film that will be a landmark in intelligent action cinema? Yes, and a necessary reference.”

Looking at the viewer reviews left on the film’s profile, it’s clear that The Matrix Reloaded is still a divisive film today, between those who criticize it for being unnecessarily complicated, its “subway ticket” plot, and others who embrace the complexity and marvel at the feature’s lavish special effects — and action. In a sequence that required the destruction of 300 cars!
This lackluster reception is obviously nothing compared to Matrix Resurrections, which has an average rating of 2.6 out of 5 on AlloCiné and which was generally poorly received. One thing is certain: the fifth opus is not coming immediately…
