The Uruguayan will play in the Libertadores semi-final against Verdão, at Allianz Parque

Palmeiras will face Boca Juniors on Thursday (5), in the semifinal of the Libertadores, and could relive the traumas of Edinson Cavani’s past, the Argentine team’s striker. This is because the player had already been eliminated in the semi-finals in Brazil in 2013. The center forward will live the ‘nightmare’ again if Verdão wins.
At the time Cavani was playing for the Uruguay national team, where he played 136 matches and scored 58 goals. He was competing in the Confederations Cup, hosted on Brazilian soil, on the eve of the 2014 World Cup.
After having passed the first phase – in a group that included Spain, Nigeria and Tahiti – the Uruguayan team had Brazil as its opponent in the semi-final, who defeated Mexico and Japan.
In the clash between the South American teams, the Brazilians had the upper hand. Cavani, Suárez and teammates were defeated 2-1 at Mineirão. Goalkeeper Julio César saved a penalty taken by Diego Forlán early in the match, Fred opened the scoring for Brazil and Cavani himself equalized early in the second half. In the 40th minute of the second phase, midfielder Paulinho scored a header, guaranteeing victory for Canarinho’s team and, consequently, a place in the final.
Uruguay’s journey has been anything but easy. Even with Cavani’s brace in the third place match, Italy won on penalties. In the big decider, Brazil beat Spain 3-0.
ALL THE SAME
Palmeiras will face Boca de Cavani on Thursday at 9.30pm (1), at Allianz Parque. The match is valid for the second leg of the Libertadores semi-final and, in the first leg, the teams drew 0-0, at the Bombonera.
