With less than a week in charge of Corinthians, coach Mano Menezes has recognized that the Juventus club team has the potential to deliver more. Timão’s elimination from the Copa Sudamericano occurred on Tuesday (3), when the team lost in the semi-finals against Fortaleza.
Mano led the team between the two matches against Fortaleza and made his debut in the 2-0 defeat at Castelão. He admitted that he did not have enough time to imprint his playing philosophy on the Corinthians team during the clash against Tricolor de Aço and underlined that the problem does not lie in the team’s mental preparation.
– We only prepared the game itself, because we didn’t have much time to do something different. We looked at some things they had done so far. Respect some of the things that brought us here. We try to analyze the opponent and make decisions. I don’t think the team has motivation and mental preparation problems. The team has some playing difficulties, this is evident – said the coach in the press conference at the end of the match.

Mano Menezes also highlighted that the change of coach during the season was detrimental to the players’ development. During the year there were four coaches, with committee members as assistants and various physical trainers.
– This scary statistic proves me right about athletes, about how we need to be careful when evaluating athletes. It’s difficult to come up with several different ideas in a short amount of time and have them end well. I want to convey something simple to you. It won’t be a very complex thing, because they won’t be able to do it in a short period of time, but they will do it – said the current commander of Corinthians.
However, Mano stressed that he wants to stay at Timão and that he sees it as a long-term job.
– I don’t think the problem is mood. He’s a little old in football. Many times the stands ask for the match, and when they don’t have it it’s another thing. The players don’t lack motivation, which I think we have to give to the team, I’ve already said it. I’m here because I wanted to be there. I know that right now there aren’t many professionals who would accept an invitation, because, even if it’s just one game, you end up losing together. But I wanted to be here, because I consider the possibility of a long-term job at Corinthians – said the coach.
