Julie Andrews spoke about the film and the possibility of expanding the franchise
Julie Andrews commented on the possibility of expanding the franchise Princess’ diary (2001), based on the novel by Meg Cabot. The actress played the Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the two features, alongside Anne Hathaway (via The Hollywood Reporter).
“I think it would be too late to do that now,” commented the actress. “There was talk of a sequel many, many years ago. But I don’t think it ever happened. And then Garry left us. Especially for me, it’s too far gone now to go back to that. It’s a lovely thought, but I think it probably wouldn’t be possible. .”
Andrews refers to Garry Marshalldirector of the two films in the franchise who passed away in 2016. The filmmaker is also known for his work in features such as A beautiful woman (1990) and Love’s comings and goings (2001).
This is not the first time that there has been talk of a third film by Princess’ diary. In 2019, Anne Hathaway revealed to Watch What Happens Live that there’s a script for a sequel, but it hasn’t gotten off the ground yet – and with the death of marshallthe chances of finding out more about the reign of Mia and Nicholas (played by Chris Pine) are minimal.
We all really wanted this to happen. It’s just that we don’t want to do it unless it’s perfect because we love it as much as you do. It is as important to us as it is to you.
Princess’ diary was released over 20 years ago and remains a romantic comedy classic, with a brilliant cast and a timeless story. The saga follows the life of Mia Thermópolisa young woman who ends up discovering that her grandmother is Queen of a country called Genovia, and now needs to train to assume the throne.
