That does look familiar to me…
Spoilers for The Boys Season 3 Episode 4 below.
‘The Boys’ sure knows how to soak usand we’re not just referring to the blood splatters or the wet, thudding noise Timothy the octopus made as it was devoured by The Deep.
Ever since Hughie’s girlfriend was crushed into a pool of blood in season one, ‘The Boys’ has prided itself on creating moments that shock and disgust in equal measure. But something curious happens this time in the third season. Although those moments appear, some of them do not have the same impact that one would expect..
But that’s nobody’s fault. It’s not that we’re tired of ‘The Boys’. No, the problem is that we have already seen some of these surprises very recently in other genre films.
For example, that epic dildo fight scene: Kimiko’s clever approach to what would normally be a standard knife fight is as hilarious as it is gory. And yes, we would love to see branded dildos like Starlight’s Starbrator on the market, as the creator of the series himself recently suggested to us.
But not so long ago ‘Everything at once everywhere’ also featured a dildo fight. Specifically, the character of Stephanie Hsu – dressed as Elvis – beat a man to death with two sex toys. And then, of course, there was also a fight with a butt plug. So it’s not like we’re short on rubber dildo fights right now.
That said, Kimiko’s battle is still a lot of fun, but if ‘The Boys’ had gotten there first, the novelty of this idea would have made us laugh more. Unfortunately, time was not on the side of the series. It’s like when two animated fish movies suddenly appear at the same time, though that’s perhaps more deliberate than this.
And that’s not all.
Earlier this season, ‘The Boys’ kicks off their spoof movie, ‘Dawn of the Seven’, with a cameo from Charlize Theron as Stormfront. “She did it really as a favor to [el productor ejecutivo] Seth Rogen because they had just done ‘Almost Impossible’ together,” said showrunner Eric Kripke.
This triple-A cameo is quite a surprise, and not just because Charlize Theron is a major character. Just a few weeks before ‘The Boys’ came back into our lives, Charlize appeared in another superhero adventure, ‘Doctor Strange 2’, and it was also in the form of a surprise cameo.
So once again, the impact of a major reveal has been lessened somewhat by its use elsewhere, and very recently, too. It doesn’t help that fans of ‘The Boys’ are probably also fans of these other stories..
Had there been a longer interval between these stories, perhaps this would have been less of an issue. But Charlize’s debut in the MCU is also more important in that this cameo opens new doors for her character. While ‘The Boys’ appearance is just a fun, throwaway moment that now pales in comparison to something more significant.
But then again, it’s no one’s fault. It’s just one of those weird timing issues that have sadly plagued ‘The Boys’ more than once this season. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like the team has been too discouraged.
When we asked showrunner Eric Kripke about this curious coincidence of Charlize Theron, he told us that: “It made me clap with joy, because it shows how perfect it is, it is something that Marvel also does.”
And it’s not like ‘The Boys’ hasn’t hit us with other memorable and bungled moments this season. Even if future episodes continue to accidentally echo other stories in the genre like this one, at least we will always have the memory of Timothy’s death and that penis that explodes.
