Despite the presence of music in Todd Phillips’ 2018 DC photo Jester (the dance stage moved quickly to the city of pop culture memes), we’re not sure we qualified the sequel as a musical. Ditto for the idea that Lady Gaga might consider a co-star offer alongside Joaquin Phoenix. However, both are apparently true, according to the Hollywood reporter.
Let’s take a look at Gaga first: she’s not in the movie yet, but she’s in the middle of an acting contract … well, if the ReportSources are correct, Harley Quinn. Sure, ever since Jester it’s not connected to the larger DC Extended Universe, it will be a different Harley than Margot Robbie, but the potential is fascinating.
Especially since Phillips and co-writer Scott Silver (both returning for the sequel) played prominent Batman characters in the first film, including a young Bruce Wayne.
And then … a musical? Unexpected, but you know you want to see how What the idea works. Phillips posted the cover of the script on social media last week, revealing a working title of Joker: Madness for two, with the subtitle referring to a mental disorder affecting two or more people. And, as we saw in the original film, Fleck’s influence is definitely starting to overflow.
So far Phillips has had our curiosity. But he now he has our attention. Assuming all is well, and apparently Phoenix is also working on their own deal to return, that’s not a bland sequel concept.
