Syria celebrates collective burials after attack on military academy

The Brazilian government condemned the attack which killed more than 100 people

This Friday (6) Syria will hold a collective funeral for dozens of government soldiers, killed in an air attack launched by unidentified “terrorists” against the military academy in the city of Homs, in the center of the country.

Last Thursday(5), an offensive launched at the end of the cadet training completion ceremony caused at least 110 deaths and 400 injuries, according to the National Human Rights Observatory.

Local press images show dozens of family members and friends of the victims, including uniformed officers, gathered in a funeral procession that started from the military hospital in Homs to the local cemetery.

To date, the Syrian government has kept the identity of the victims and the total number of dead under strict secrecy. No terrorist group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Homs area is one of the most monitored by anti-aircraft forces, radars and government, Russian and Iranian troops. In the absence of clear information, local authorities believe the attack was launched by factions of the same Syrian military group with the aim of eliminating a number of senior officers in Damascus, as part of an internal struggle.

After the attack, the United Nations (UN) envoy for Syria called for an “immediate reduction” in violence in the country. “These horrific scenes are a reminder of the need for an immediate reduction in violence, a nationwide ceasefire and a cooperative approach in the fight against terrorist groups listed by the Security Council,” Geir Pedersen said in a statement published in Geneva.

According to him, who is “deeply concerned about the escalation of violence in Syria,” all parties must respect their obligations under international law and ensure the protection of civilians and infrastructure.

The Brazilian government also lamented the attack and expressed “its condolences to the families of the victims and its solidarity with the people and government of Syria”, as well as reiterating “its firm repudiation of any act of terrorism”. .
