Review: ‘Lightyear’ plots an aimless journey

The film has three goals: to instill nostalgia, to delight the elderly, and to attract children again.

light year begins with an impactful sentence: the film we are about to see is exactly what Andy, the boy who owns the toys, made Toy Story, fall in love with the character of Buzz Lightyear. It is not a trivial matter. Those who mainly remember the first three feature films of the toy saga come to life know the importance of Buzz in the boy’s life, which even surpasses his passion for Woody.

But it is impossible, during the film, not to wonder if this is a story that would really make a kid like Andy happy. No matter how hard he tries, mainly betting on a fascinating aspect, the director Angus MacLane he has a central problem: he doesn’t know who his audience is. light yearafter all, he has three responsibilities in the story: to insert nostalgia, to delight the elderly and, even so, to attract children.

But in this clash of forces only nostalgia really works. It’s nice to know where Buzz’s story came from and how some iconic expressions like “to infinity and beyond” were born. Also, the story signed by MacLane and Jason Headley it has no definite direction. Talk about time travel, including some complications like Interstellarbut the characters are too foolish and childish.

Connection

Three secondary characters (Darby, Mo, and Izzy) repeatedly repeat lines and get too wrong, to the point that villain Zurg has less impact on the narrative than sabotaging this trio of characters. He gets boring. On the other hand, talking about time in such a complex way can entertain the little ones with these little scripted nonsense, but without ever having a real connection to the story.

for whom it was made light year? It is a question that resists and, moreover, it is difficult to understand Pixar. The studio has put films like Red: growing up is a beast And Luca straight Disney +While light year is, easily, the studio’s most streaming feature. This indecision ultimately costs the magic.
