“We thought it was the end of the series”: This departure really scared the creators of NCIS

Mark Harmon played Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS for 19 years. As a headliner, he was indispensable to the fans and the show. His departure in season 19, marking the show’s fifth major departure, didn’t just leave viewers in shock: In fact, the producers were confused as well.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on the 20th anniversary of the series, producer Charles Floyd Johnson talked about this topic.

We thought that was the end of the series. To come in at 6:30 a.m., five days a week and be the main character who was the main character — that’s pretty tough, and he did it for 18 seasons. He was approaching 70 and wanted to spend time with Pam and her children.

He explained that the actor started talking about leaving in the 15th or 16th season:But he was so committed to this team and so supportive of the show. He was very proud of it and stayed longer than expected.

“How are they going to change this guy?”

Director James Whitmore Jr. had similar thoughts and wondered who would replace the show’s iconic figure. “When Harmon was talking about leaving and there was a chance he might not come back, I asked, “How are they going to replace this guy?” And they brought in the only guy who could do it, Gary Cole.

Gary Cole (as Alden Parker) has indeed become the main character of the show and their fears are erased: NCIS is still active and the series has no end. NCIS It’s probably one of the most enduring shows of all time, still relevant despite the departure of all but one of its original main cast!

Indeed, Sasha Alexander (Kaitlin Todd) left the series in Season 2, Cote de Pablo (Ziva David) in Season 10, Michael Weatherly (Anthony DiNozzo) in Season 13, and Polly Perrette (Abby Ciuto) in Season 15. Only Sean Murray. The role of Timothy McGee remains in the series, which still has a bright future.
