The state has 46 municipalities in an emergency situation; at least ten highways are closed and flooding is expected to reach heights of up to 14 meters in the Itajaí Valley
A man died this Saturday, 7, in the city of Palm treeIn Santa Catarina, victim of the heavy rains that hit the state. This is the second death recorded in Santa Catarina due to this week’s storm: on Wednesday a man died in Rio do Oeste, in the Itajaí valley, after trying to cross the current in a rice field.
This Saturday, Governor Jorginho Mello ordered the closure of the Ituporanga and José Boiteux dams due to the high amount of rain. “We have an indigenous issue there that will be evaluated and addressed, but the dam needs to be closed at this time so that we have another alternative to contain the water,” he explained. “They have made some requests and we will respond, without a doubt.”
In this evening’s press conference, he stated that the closure of the dams is an attempt to contain the volume of water especially in the Itajaí valley, where the rain falls most intensely. According to him, in the early hours of this Sunday, municipalities in the region such as Rio do Sul and Blumenau could experience flooding up to 14 meters high.
“We ask people to leave their homes up to the second floor. Take what you can. God will give us the strength so that we can do this, because otherwise it will be very difficult to save,” the governor said. “When you get to 10 meters you can no longer act.”
Santa Catarina has 46 municipalities that have already issued emergency decrees. The governor asked people living in at-risk areas to seek safe shelter. “The state is united, it is doing everything that can be done, but, right now, the request is for people to seek safe refuge, to leave their homes if necessary. We must protect what matters most, which is people’s lives,” said Jorginho Mello.
According to the State Civil Protection, the forecast is that the heavy rain will continue this Sunday, the 8th, and will begin to ease at the beginning of next week. The predicted volume of water could reach 200 millimeters, with a high to very high risk of events such as landslides, flash and gradual flooding.
