Perseu Ribeiro de Almeida was shot dead in a kiosk in Barra da Tijuca; the police suspect that he was mistaken for a militiaman
The wife of Perseu Ribeiro de Almeida, one of the doctors killed in Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, reportedly asked her husband to have a drink in the hotel and not expose himself to the dangers of the city. In an interview with The globe, Verônica Gomes Almeida reports that it was “almost like a premonition.” In addition to his wife, to whom he had been married for five years, the orthopedist left behind a 3-year-old daughter.
According to the interview, the couple agreed that the professional would not travel around the city, precisely because of the violence they had seen on the news. He would have kept his promise, going to a kiosk a few steps from the hotel where he was staying. That night Perseus was brutally murdered.
They had spoken shortly before the crime, when the doctor had sent a photo together with friends and work colleagues. “I said: ‘God accompany you, protect you and guide your steps.’ Just before going out for a drink, he joked with me and sent me a photo of Rocinha, saying that he was going there. Then he said she was going to take a shower and that she had her cell phone in the bathtub. I told him it was dangerous and he said, ‘God forbid I take a shower with my phone and die of shock in the bathtub.'”

The pharmaceutical representative said she tried to call her husband on the morning of Thursday the 5th, still not knowing what had happened. Perseus had not responded to her last message and tried to call the hotel room, via Instagram, but her husband did not answer. It was from the press that he learned that the police believe he was mistaken for a militiaman.
He was not informed by the police
When she learned of the crime, she thought that her husband had been killed because he was wearing the shirt of Bahia, his favorite team, but the case was much worse. One of the hypotheses of the investigation is that the doctor was confused with the militiaman Taillon de Alcântara Pereira Barbosa.
At the time of the crime, the daughter was in Salvador (BA) staying with Verônica’s aunt. The woman would have gone there too, but plans had changed. “I had to collect my husband’s body at the airport. I found out about it on the news. Nobody called me. The police did not call. The hotel and event didn’t care. Nobody contacted me. That’s why I got scared. Not even my mother-in-law knew. I will not judge the hotel and the event. Now, imagine if I take out my phone and look at the photo?”, she asked.
Perseus’ older son, 11, knows his father is gone, but his little one, 3, doesn’t know yet. “I will have to redefine myself because I have a 3-year-old daughter who keeps asking about her dad. She doesn’t know that her father is dead and I don’t know how I’m going to tell her. According to her, the little girl sees her father’s photo and asks to see him live. “My daughter will grow up and her father will not be by her side.”

“He will never come home again. If you send a message, she will never respond again. At the end of this war, everyone loses. The mothers of the criminals who died will leave crying just like me. They are not responsible for the path their children choose. None of this will bring them back. My husband was happy because he was with his friends attending a conference that he wanted very much. I sympathize with their friends’ families because they feel the same pain that devastates me. That day I went to sleep and, five hours later, when I woke up, my life changed completely,” he concludes.
Remember the case
The four doctors, who were sitting at the kiosk, were targeted by snipers who arrived in a white car around 1 am. The images from the local surveillance cameras show the vehicle stopped on the beach avenue.
The occupants of the car, all dressed in black, got out, headed towards the victims and started shooting. The action causes an assault among those present at the kiosk. After the execution, the gang runs back to the car, which heads in an unknown direction.
Tadeu de Lima Barbosa, the owner of the kiosk, said the victims appeared to leave the place and had already paid the bill at the time of the crime.
In addition to Perseu, the doctors Diego Ralf de Souza Bomfim, 35 years old, brother of the federal deputy Sâmia Bomfim (Psol-SP), and Marcos de Andrade Corsato, 62 years old, were also killed. The fourth doctor who was with the victims He is Daniel Sonnewend Proença, 32 years old, the only survivor of the attack.
