The government will remove Brazilians from Israel in the midst of the conflict

Six planes are reserved for repatriation from Tel Aviv. The first is already taking off from Natal towards Italy, to be closer to the conflict. Egypt and Jordan are also participating in the operation. The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) announced this Sunday (10/08) the start of a repatriation operation for Brazilians who are in the conflict zone in Israel and in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

A KC-30 aircraft, with capacity for 230 passengers, takes off from Natal bound for Rome, Italy. It is expected to land in Tel Aviv on Monday afternoon or Tuesday for initial boarding.

The government has reserved a total of six aircraft for the operation: in addition to two KC-30s, there will be two KC-390s, each with a capacity of 80 passengers, and two aircraft provided by the Presidency of the Republic, with 40 seats, respectively .

The first plane will leave this Sunday from the capital of Rio Grande do Norte towards Italy to be closer to the conflict, while the embassies finalize the first list for repatriations. Doctors and psychologists complete the team.

“We will adapt the size of the mission according to the needs assigned by our ministries,” informed FAB commander Marcelo Damasceno. “We have a brigadier there at the embassy [de Israel] helping in this consolidation of all the Brazilians, from all the embassies in the region, Egypt, Jordan and Israel, so that we can bring all the Brazilians who are in the region – logically, those who want it.”

“It is important to say that many of them have already been placed on commercial aircraft as well.” At the same time, operations at Ben-Gurion Airport, Israel’s main airport, are expected to normalize, allowing Brazilians to leave the country on commercial flights, without needing government help.

Accompanied by the Minister of Defense, José Múcio, the Air Force Brigade Lieutenant participated this Sunday morning in a meeting at the Itamaraty Palace, convened to analyze the conflict in Israel and Palestine.

Damasceno also informed that the first list of repatriates should be ready on Monday morning. In addition to Tel Aviv, Brazilian government planes can use airports in other countries that border Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

“Tel Aviv is the airport that will repatriate Brazilians linked to the Israeli community. We are analyzing other countries and which airports to assist the portion linked to the Middle East as a whole”, explained the FAB commander.

Planes must always pick up Brazilians in the afternoon, to facilitate travel within the airports. “In times of crisis like this, ground transportation becomes more difficult. So we give them the option to go to the airport in the morning.”

Itamaraty has been tracking Brazilian citizens in the region, identifying those who wish to return to Brazil. There are an estimated 14,000 residents in Israel and 6,000 in the Palestinian territories, the vast majority outside the area affected by the attacks.

Also this Sunday, a meeting of the United Nations (UN) Security Council was scheduled at the organization’s headquarters in New York. The extraordinary call was defined by Brazil, which holds the presidency of the body. Decisions are awaited on the attacks launched by Hamas, a radical Islamic group designated as terrorist by the European Union and the United States.
