Modern Playlist | + 50 alternative rock news clips

October’s Modern Playlist features 50 recent clips with nearly 3 hours of continuous music in a landscape of alternative rock releases. The list opens with the new wave revival of the English band Foot and ends with the country folk of Saint Saviour, stage name of the British Becky Jones, who became known for singing with the electronic band Groove Armada.

In the contents, a complete vision of the electric trends of alternative sound, including grunge, shoegazer, dreampop, Britpop revival, garage rock, mod, ska, surf music, folk, country and much more.

Among the new names, there are two singers of well-known groups, who are embarking on solo careers: Grian Chatten, singer of the Irish band DC Fontaines, and Jake Shears, pseudonym of Jason Sellards, singer of the New York band Scissor Sorelle. Other highlights include Cinema Hearts, from singer Caroline Weinroth, who transitioned from beauty pageants in Virginia to the music scene, girl-led bands Fanchon and Daisy the Great, who seek to revamp rock by mixing grunge with dreampop, and Seeweed and The Southgates, who despite evoking classic Britpop are surprising because they come from the United States and Finland respectively.

The selection also includes veterans, who return to the scene with new musical works, such as Brian Setzer, still rockabilly as in the days of the band Stray Cats, a success in the 80s, and the Finnish band The 69 Eyes, who plays their gothic style – garage rock sound since 1989.

Other “old” names include Shed Seven, an original survivor of the Britpop movement, Jenny Lewis, former singer of the American indie band Rilo Kiley, and The Dandy Warhols, still remembered today for the soundtrack to the “Veronica Mars” series. Find out what artists who reached their peak between the 90s and 2000s are doing today.

The list also includes many covers. “This Is How It Feels” by Los Fastidios is the ska version of a Britpop hit by Inspiral Carpets; The Decibels’ “Open Up Your Door” revives a 1966 single by the garage band Richard and the Young Lions; The Shivas’ “We Belong Togheter” is a classic ballad best remembered for Richie Valens’ 1959 recording; “Aloha from Hell”, by The 69 Eyes, is an original by the band The Cramps; “Tequila”, by Los Bitchos, is a variation of a 1950s rock’n’roll instrumental, transformed into surf music by the Ventures in 1963.

As always, videos are organized by sound affinity in a playlist – to watch on Smart TV, look for Cast in Chrome’s Settings tab or More Tools/Stream etc. on Edge -, with the aim of inserting a sequence that enhances the impression of video/mixtape recording. Try listening without skipping tracks on the Premium version of YouTube (without ad breaks).
