Saudi Arabia has taken the first step towards hosting the 2034 World Cup. This Monday, the country’s Football Association released a letter of intent formalizing its interest in competing as the centerpiece of the tournament.
The bid has already received the support of 70 other federations and is the strong favorite to host the World Cup in 11 years’ time. It is worth mentioning that only countries from Asia and Oceania will be able to compete as hosts of the competition, due to the rotation carried out by FIFA between the continents.

The intention to host the World Cup is part of a series of actions Saudi Arabia has taken to expand its connection with the rest of the world. Called “Vision 2030”, the project has sport as one of its foundations to transform the country into one of the centers of major global events.
Initially, the Saudis’ plan was to host the 2030 edition. However, FIFA confirmed last week that Portugal, Spain and Morocco will be responsible for organizing this year’s World Cup, which will also feature inaugural matches in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
The next World Cup is scheduled for 2026, with the United States, Mexico and Canada co-hosting the event. The announcement of the 2034 location will be made in the second half of 2024.
